Advance Open Water Class Information
Instructor: Don Snyder
Please read the following
information carefully. It explains what documentation needs to be completed before the water activities, how the
classroom work will be completed, how the weekend dives will be conducted and the necessary equipment you must have to complete
the certification.
General Information:
For all continuing education classes you must have a current (within
one year) RSTC Medical History Statement on file at Don’s SCUBA, LLC. If your medical history has not changed
from the information listed on the medical form signed by your physician in your student folder you will not be required to
have another one signed. However, if something has changed, you now answer “YES” to any of the questions
on the RSTC, you will be required to have another Medical Statement sign by your physician before participating in any water activities.
If this is your first Don’s SCUBA, LLC class you will be required
to complete a Student Folder and have a RSTC Medical History Statement signed by your physician before participating in any water activities.
You must sign a Standard Safe Diving Practices Statement of Understanding
and Liability Release and Assumption of Risk Agreement.
Advance Open Water Certification
Class and Weekend Dives:
General:
The dives will start at Portage Quarry @ 9:00AM Saturday morning.
We will be doing the first three dives of the certification at Portage Quarry, they are as follows; Navigation, Wreck and
Night.
You can camp at Portage Quarry or acquire accommodation at a local hotel
for the night. On Sunday morning we will be meeting @ 8:00AM back at Portage for the trip to Whitestar Quarry to finish
up the Deep and Search & Recovery dives.
The following specialty dives will be conduct as your five open water
certification dives. The classroom academics will be conducted at the dive site. The dives are list in the order
we will be conducting them in this weekend.
Navigation Dive (page 263)
Wreck Dive (page 345)
Night Dive (page 185)
Deep Dive (page 67)
Search & Recovery Dive (page 255)
Please read the introduction to the
Adventures in Diving Manual and the above listed adventure dive chapters and the knowledge review questions written/filled
in
at the end of each chapter. We will be reviewing the answers to the knowledge reviews before completing the open water
dives. The knowledge reviews will be collected, placed in your student folder and become a part of your permanent record
at Don’s SCUBA, LLC.
In the Search & Recovery chapter page 239 of your Adventures in Diving
manual there are 3 different types of knots. Please practice tying these knots before the open water dives as we will
be using these knots for several exercises during the weekend.
Student Equipment Requirements:
One of the reasons I pick the above dives is because the equipment list required by you is short. During open water training, each student diver must be equipped with
a mask, fins, snorkel, appropriate exposure protection, dive knife/tool, scuba tank, buoyancy control device with low-pressure
inflator, weight system, regulator, alternate air source, submersible pressure gauge, depth gauge, timing device and/or dive
computer, compass and Recreational Dive Planner (table or The Wheel.) For the Night Dive, student divers must each have
an underwater light and whistle. A backup underwater light and marker/chemical lights are recommended.
You
should already have most of what you need to complete the certification but if not here is a list:
Compass
Two dive lights (Primary and Backup)
Dive slate (something to write on and with underwater)
Hood and Gloves (cold water gear)
At least a 5mm two piece wet suit or dry suit (if
certified to dive dry) for the deep dive.
Dive knife/tool
Whistle, flare, inflatable signal tube
Personal marker light (chemical light OK)
I will be providing everything else need for the weekend dives.
